CAROLINA VOICES

ANNOUNCES 2008-09 SEASON

Charlotte Conductor David Tang

to assume Interim Artistic Director position

Charlotte, NC….(June 30, 2008) — The Carolina Voices’ Board of Directors have announced that Artistic Director William McConnell has resigned in order to take an Assistant Dean position at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinberg, NC.   Paul Kohut, Board Chair, said that David Tang will assume the position of Interim Artistic Director for next season.

“David is a very well-known and respected conductor in the Charlotte area,” said Kohut.  “He has been serving as Artistic Advisor for Carolina Voices over the past year.  We’re thrilled that he’s agreed to take on an expanded role and help Carolina Voices bring new energy, entertainment and excitement to the community through choral music.”

David Tang is perhaps best known in the Charlotte community as the Director of the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte, the combined choruses of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra from 1996-2004. Under his leadership, the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte performed to great local and regional acclaim, performing as many as 25 performances a year in a variety of formats.  David also served as Associate Conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra from 1998-2003, leading as many as 40 performances per season with the orchestra, including the CSO's popular holiday and children's concerts.

In 2007, Mr. Tang founded the Firebird Arts Alliance, which builds community by bringing together artists and artistic institutions, from all artistic disciplines, to collaborate in innovative and profitable projects. In its first season, the Firebird Arts Alliance has facilitated collaborations between over 25 artistic organizations and hundreds of individual artists from all disciplines and walks of life.

Mr. Tang has conducted the Wheeling, Quad City, Charleston and Windsor Symphony Orchestras, led acclaimed ballet productions for the North Carolina Dance Theatre and Charleston Ballet Theatre, as well as opera performances at Central Piedmont Community College and the University of Michigan. He led members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Singers in the nationally broadcast American debut of British tenor, Russell Watson for PBS. Mr. Tang has served on the faculties of West Virginia University, Davidson College and CPCC and as Artistic Director of the Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia, one of the most prestigious semi-professional choirs in the United States.

"I am honored and eager to work with Carolina Voices' talented singers, its diverse and dynamic Board of Directors, its fantastic managerial staff, and with its gifted staff conductors," said Mr. Tang. "I feel that the organization is poised to take tremendous artistic strides that will make a greater and more significant impact on the quality of life in the region, and am thrilled to accept this opportunity."
